The BrokeAss Foursome from the Turkish RipOff of THE WIZARD OF OZ

For a couple of decades, producers in Turkey cranked out unlicensed ripoffs of Hollywood movies:  RAMBO, STAR TREK, E.T., THE EXORCIST, STAR WARS, etc.

Aysecik ve sihirli cüceler rüyalar Ülkesinde (literally, Aysecik in the Land of the Magic Dwarfs) was the Turkish take on THE WIZARD OF OZ.  It’s pretty primitive filmmaking:  there’s even a light-leak in the camera so most of the footage has a red overexposure flash on the right side of the frame.  There are unintentionally dark scenes shot in broad daylight, a Wizard who looks like a trick-or-treat mannequin from BigLots!, and fat-rumped jolly peasant dances galore.  In other words, it’s a blast!

C'mon, even Thomas Edison knew you have to throw light on a subject in order to see it...

Actress Zeynep Degirmengiolu and her dog Banju get swept away in a crudely animated tornado and land in “Dreamland.”  The Munchkins who greet her are all in military attire and have names like Happy, Angry, Dummy and Sneezy.  From there Aysecik meets the usual suspects, and along they go to meet the Wizard, stopping periodically to perform some heel-toe / clap-clap dances.  The Wizard’s inner sanctum resembles a West Texas barbeque pit, and little Aysecik’s magic slippers look like something snatched from Grey Gardens‘ Goodwill bag.

That's Glenda the Good Witch on the left wearing the Junior High prom gown. And the entire Munchkin population.

It’s naive, rebel, psychotronic cinema that’s perfect for a lazy evening in front of the TV.

And YES! it does synch up with DARK SIDE OF THE MOON…
